此电影院上映时，片长接近三小时，随后的DVD版本又增加了44分钟。最初发布的单碟电影原声带专辑超过了70分钟，但在三部曲的第一部进行了类似的扩展后，新增了更多的素材。实际上，专辑的时长为三小时八分钟44秒，比电影本身的剧场版还要长，并包含了一些实际上在电影中没有出现的音乐。还附带了一本45页的小册子，其中包含了由道格·亚当斯撰写的广泛的内文附注，详细介绍了作曲家霍华德·肖尔为这部史诗故事创作音乐的方法，包括乐谱示例。其中很多音乐都是根据第一部电影创作的主题进行推演的，但这部配乐更加多样，适用于一个主角分成不同小组，并在大部分画面时间里展开各自冒险的电影。尽管有一些轻快、均衡的部分，但也有很多戏剧性、激动人心的音乐，与一部在追踪复杂的幻想情节后，最终的结局体现了许多西部片的常见结构——实际上就是印第安人攻击堡垒，骑兵拯救了全局。然而，在那个决议之后，指环的超越任务仍然存在，配乐以类似Björk的Emiliana Torrini悲切地演唱《Gollum’s Song》作为结尾，表达了绝望。这是一个黯淡的结局，展望了在最后一部电影中讲述的故事的解决。除了三张CD，该套装还包括第四张光盘，以DVD音频的形式重复播放整个配乐，并配有5.1环绕声混音。
